Symptoms
When a file that is less than 1MB is written to CD using Solaris[TM] 8 2/02 and
the Plextor 40/12/40S CDRW, and then mounted (either manually or w/ vold)
the system hangs up for 10 - 15 seconds before succussfully mounting the
file. This lockup does not occur when using Solaris[TM] 9 or if using a
differnt vendor's CDRW. Customers are unable to switch to Solaris 9 or
another CDRW vendor on the fly.

Resolution

To work around this bug id#4918819, please follow these steps:
"When writing a file that is less than 1MB to Plextor CDROM
writer.  An additional file must be included to increase the
image size above 1MB.  Use the following command to create a
dummy file:
"mkfile 2m testfile"
This command will create an empty 2 MB file, that must be
included with the original file to create an image that is
greater than 1MB and then written to the Plextor CDROM writer.
If the original image is greater than 1MB to start with, this
work-around is not necessary."

Please note that Sun does not support Plextor, but this document does
confirm that the Plextor CDRW has been confirmed usuable in the application
stated above. If further supportability questions arise Plextor should be
contacted directly.

Internal Comments
The customer needs to be able to access this work-around on a Sun website,
in order to satisfy the requirements of their Government client. This
work-around has been tested using the Plextor CDROM writer in a
Sun Blade[TM] 150, or a Sunfire[TM] 280r. As mentioned above, the
problem is seen in Solaris 8, not in Solaris 9.

Comment: I reworded a few things so it reads a little smoother, and also added specific Plextor support information, as this device is a third party drive not supported by Sun. I understand we are posting this document to meet a government requirement so I just wanted to make it clear that for further support the customer must contact Plextor directly, not Sun.
