Symptoms

On a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6320, 288GB of free space is available but any volume larger than 150GB cannot be created. In other words, only a subset of the available space can be mapped as a volume.

Resolution

The Sun StorEdge 6320 (applies to Sun StorEdge[TM] 6020 and Sun StorEdge[TM] 6120 as well) can only map contiguous space as one slice.

Look at the output of volslice list in extractor:

Slice Slice Num Start Blk Size Blks Capacity Volume
census 0 0 734012928 350.003 GB tray0_pool1
- - 734012928 314565120 149.996 GB tray0_pool1
alak_vol_1 2 1048578048 1048578048 500.000 GB tray0_pool1
berk_vol_1 3 2097156096 1048578048 500.000 GB tray0_pool1
- - 3145734144 290204160 138.379 GB tray0_pool1

Notice there is an unmapped slice after the first one that is 149GB in size. At the end, the last slice has 138GB free. The Config service GUI will show this as 288GB free. However Configuration Service will fail when attempting to create a 288GB volume.

There is no choice but to map the two non-contiguous slices separately.

There is only one way to fix this. Delete all the volumes (only the two 500's actually) and restore everything from tape after recreating the volumes. The reason that only the 500GB volumes need to be deleted is that the free space will be contiguous afterwards.

Relief/Workaround

Concatenate the volumes with software RAID, either Veritas or Solstice DiskSuite[TM] on the host side.

Comment: Tasked performed on document during final review:

- Changed title to comply to the standard format
- Made simple sentence/grammatical corrections
- Applied trademarking
- Corrected Product meta-tagging

In the process of doing the final review and making the document more customer friendly, I am faced the following difficulties in some of the original text:

1. The use of the term "vols". Is "vols" short for "volumes"? Or something else? Are end customers expected to understand the term "vols" when used in Sun's technical documentation/knowledge articles?

2. In the "Temporary Workaround" section, you stated "Concatenate them with software RAID, Veritas or SDS on the host side.". When you say "Concatenate them...", what does the "them" refer to? Is them = vols = volumes = slice? Please elaborate. Also, what is SDS (expand the acronymn)?
