Symptoms
If a system has both Seagate and Fujitsu drives installed in the same enclosure, mirroring between the Seagate and Fujitsu drives will not work.
Though both Seagate and Fujitsu drives have the same part# and option#, they are physically different in construction.:
  • Manufacturing Part# 370-6689,
  • Option# X9256A.

There is no actual error message.

It is possible see both Seagate and Fujitsu drives in the same enclosure, using the 'iostat -E' command.

Resolution
When creating a mirror with mixed Seagate and Fujitsu drives, specify the same partition size in cylinders, (8923 in example following) for both drives. This can be done through the format(1M) utility.
For Example:

Internal 73 GB disks are Seagate ST373207LC and FUJITSU MAP3735NC.

Run format(1M) for each disk, then select fdisk to create an fdisk partition:

  1. Delete all existing partition/directories.
  2. Create a new partition table:
Select the partition type to create: 1=SOLARIS
(or type "c" to specify the size in cylinders). c
    Enter starting cylinder number: 1
Enter partition size in cylinders: 8923
Should this become the active partition? y
  3. Update disk configuration and exit, then write a new label to the disk.

Next, create a Disk type on the both disks:

   <DEFAULT cyl 8921 alt 2 hd 255 sec 63>

It will now be possible to create a mirror with the disks, using Sun StorEdge[TM] Volume Manager or VxVM.

Additional Information
