Symptoms

After a period of idle time (8 hours+) the KVM(keyboard video mouse) switch locks up and can't access the attached SUN servers without power cycling the KVM.

Using several Sun Fire[TM] V240s running Solaris[TM] 9 (9/04), configured with XVR-100 graphics cards connected to the NTI KVM. The common keyboard and mouse are Sun[TM] Type 6 USB, part numbers 3201273-01 and 3703632-01 respectively.

Problem occurs with and without USB extender cables (active or inactive). Have disabled powerd (moved aside S85power in rc2.d), and disabled power management in CDE dtpower.

A similar type problem can also appear with NTI rackmux-17usbv-8 and Sun Fire[TM] V480.

Resolution

NTI USB KVM switches are not tested or recommended by SUN so there is no responsibility of SUN to take ownership to fix the problem. Check the NTI vendor website to see if the vendor is making claims their KVM is compatible with Solaris[TM] and these SUN computers. If there is a claim the customer should contact the vendor for assistance.

Note: Always install the latest USB framework patch.

Relief/Workaround

In the case with the Sun Fire[TM] V240 you will have to recycle power on the KVM and in the case with the Sun Fire[TM] V480 you will need to reboot the SF V480.

Additional Information

NTI's older KVMs (KEEMUX and NODEMUX) for Sun Ultra[TM] 60/10/5, Sun Fire[TM] 280R, Sun Blade[TM] 1000, or Sun Blade[TM] 100, where we use the older style Sun Keyboard (Type 6) with the mini DIN connector on the KVM will work. It is only with the purely USB KVM and USB Type 6 keyboard and mouse that the problem occurs. Source: http://supportforum.sun.com

SF V480 does not respond to USB KVM after a couple of days inactivity.
