Symptoms
The grill in front of the CPU Fan Tray may become clogged with dust causing inefficient cooling and a higher than normal CPU temperature. A thermal error condition may be reported by prtdiag.

SunCheckup could report this as follows:

 CHECK ID: 1478
SEVERITY: HIGH
PROBLEM:
The Enterprise 450 system's CPU temperature is not within
the acceptable range.
RECOMMEND:
Investigate and schedule diagnostics for the E450 with a Sun
Service Representative. Check the airfilters for excessive dirt.

The TLP analysis could also include (for example):

 Check Analysis
The E450 CPU's temperature reading is outside of acceptable
operating conditions. CPU temperatures must be below 50C.
Analysis shows: CPU 1 has a recorded temperature of 53 degrees
Celsius CPU 3 has a recorded temperature of 51 degrees Celsius

In the Sun Enterprise[TM] 450 Server, a high central processing unit (CPU) temperature and a high CPU fan speed can cause problems even if ambient temperature is low.  The system will shutdown if the CPU reaches 80 degrees Celsius .

If diagnostics report no problem with the fan tray module or with any other parts of the system, the system may simply be suffering from an accumulation of dust in the air intake path of the CPU fans.

Resolution
[See the exploded view of the E450 in the System Handbook for designation of parts.]
  1. The system must be shutdown as disengaging the left panel will cut DC power to internal components

  2. Remove the Removable Media Door Assembly

  3. Loosen the 2 large captive screws at the back of the Left Panel and slide the panel back 1cm

  4. Remove the Front Door Assembly: remove 6 screws around the frame, unlatch 4 tabs down the right side, slide the whole assembly left

  5. Vacuum the dust out through the left side grill

  6. Reassemble the system

  7. Monitor CPU temperature and fan speed to confirm resolution. Temperatures should be around 40C and the fan speed around 31 (3100 rpm).

For examples of prtdiag before and after cleaning, see Additional Information below.
