Applies to:

Sun XVR-100 Graphics Accelerator - Version: Not Applicable and later   [Release: N/A and later ]
Sun Blade 150 Workstation - Version: Not Applicable and later    [Release: N/A and later]
Solaris SPARC Operating System - Version: 8.0 to 9 9/05 HW U9   [Release: 8.0 to 9.0]
All Platforms

Symptoms

The default depth for XVR-100 is 24-bit when the following patches are installed:

Solaris 8: 114537-05 () or later
Solaris 9: 114538-05 () or later

Without these patches the XVR-100 default depth is 8-bit.

The color flashing occurs when the XVR-100 is configured to a 8-bit depth only.

Cause

If you experience colormap flashing (incorrect colors or color changes),  your Sun XVR-100 graphics accelerator might be incorrectly configured.  Perform one of the following procedures to set 24-bit or 8+24-bit color depth.

Solution

Setting to 24-bit Color Depth:

1. Using the fbconfig command, set the Sun XVR-100 graphics accelerator to 24-bit color depth.

Become "super user (root)"
Then run the command:
# fbconfig -dev pfb0 -depth 24

2. Log out, then log back in for the change to take effect.

Notes:
- 24-bit mode performance might be slower than 8-bit color depth mode.
- Some old applications requiring a 8-bit default visual may not be able to
run in this mode.

Setting to 8+24-bit Color Depth

1. If you require that both 8-bit and 24-bit graphics be run simultaneously (8+24-bit color depth), the Sun XVR-100 graphics accelerator patch must  first be installed.

Solaris 8: 114537-45 or later
Solaris 9: 114538-46 or later

2. Then become "root" and perform the following command to enable fake8:

# fbconfig -dev pfb0 -fake8 enabled

3. Log out, then log back in for the change to take effect.

Note: The command "fbconfig -dev pfb0 -fake8 disable" turns off 8+24-bit mode and return to the previous color depth mode.

Note: 8-bit color depth performance is slower in 8+24-bit mode
