Symptoms

After placing a DLT7000 tape in a DLT4700 tape drive and typing:

tar -xvf /dev/rmt/0

the error message "read IO error" is displayed.

Solution

Resolution
You must use the "l" low density option when creating the tape on the
DLT7000. You must also specify the "b" Berkeley device.

Example:

DLT7000# tar -cvf /dev/rmt/0lb /filename

Now move the tape to the DLT4700:

DLT4700# tar -xvf /dev/rmt/0b
