Symptoms
The Sun Netra[TM] X1 systems now are made with either a 400MHz cpu or a 500MHz cpu. The hardware differences between these cpu modules may cause the 500MHz units to not boot to Solaris[TM] unless the Operating Environment (OE) being booted has been modified by a new OE image modification file.

The problem can be encountered in either of 2 scenarios. Some customers wish to copy a disk in a system from a "master", then put the copy into a newly ordered system to ship to their client. For them, copying the disk is simpler than adding all the applications to a new system they just ordered before shipping it. The other scenario occurs if a boot is attempted using a jumpstart image that has not been properly modified.

In the first scenario, the master disk was built up on an OE that was modified using the mis.netra-x1.259-3836-02 file. For the second scenario, the OE image being used to jumpstart is modified with mis.netra-x1.259-3836-02. The current file for the Netra X1 is mis.netra-x1.259-3836-03.zip.

For either situation, a 500MHz cpu Netra X1 will fail to boot. The boot error is as follows:

Sun Netra X1 (UltraSPARC-IIe 500MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 4.0, 512 MB memory installed, Serial #50721448.
Ethernet address 0:3:ba:5:f2:a8, Host ID: 8305f2a8.
Executing last command: boot net - install
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ethernet@c File and args: - install
Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet
SunOS Release 5.8 Version Generic_108528-06 64-bit

(Can't load tod module) Program terminated
ok

Resolution
The solution to this situation is to create a new Solaris[TM] 8 jumpstart image (version 10/00 and above), and then modify that image with the mis.netra-x1.259-3836-03.zip file. That will add the software necessary for Solaris to run on the hardware plus the LOM software.
