Symptoms

When trying to access Storage Navigator remotely results in the following error message: "The session is already released. Please logon again. (1 4011)".

Access to the Storage Navigator directly from the SVP (Service Processor) is possible without any problems.

Resolution

It is observed that one of the environment settings "RMI? time-out period" in Storage Navigator which is set very low could cause this issue.

Java[TM] RMI (remote method invocation) is a remote procedure call that allows Java[TM] objects stored in the network to be run remotely. In the Storage Navigator network environment, Storage Navigator downloads Java objects from the SVP.

Java RMI time-out period: If the user cannot access the SVP for a period of time because of a network error, the Java RMI time-out logs off the SVP user. See additional information for more details.

The Java RMI time-out period by default is set to 1 minute, increasing this value to 10 minutes or more resolves the issue.

To set this option refer to Section 3.4 "Setting Storage Navigator Environment Parameters" in Hitachi TagmaStore? Universal Storage Platform and Network Storage Controller Storage Navigator? User?s Guide.

Note: After setting environment parameters, log on to Storage Navigator so that new parameters can take effect.

Additional Information

Java RMI time-out period has the following parameters:

  • Specify 1 minute, 5 ? 60 minutes in 5-minute increments, 70 to 120 minutes in 10-minute increments, or One day (24 hours). The default is 1 minute.
  • Specify NO to disable this parameter.

Note: If you specify NO as the value of the Java RMI time-out period, the user is not logged off automatically when an error occurs. This might prevent that user from logging in again. The setting is not recommended under ordinary circumstances.

  • The value of the Java RMI time-out period must be greater than the value set for the smallest polling period, either for checking exclusive lock or for checking obstacles (see below for those parameters). For example, specify a value of the Java RMI time-out period parameter to satisfy the following condition: Java RMI time-out period > min [A,B], when A = Polling period for checking exclusive lock, B = Polling period for checking obstacles, and min [A, B] indicates the minimum value selected from A and B.

Note: You cannot disable this parameter.

Comment: I had reviewed the document and did a little modification to it without changing the original content of the document. Basically included,

1. (Service Processor) to the term SVP used through the document. thre is the requirement for author to include and explain all the abbreviated terms and jargons used in Knowledge document.

2. URL location where the Storage Navigator Documents or User Guide can be located and download.

3. include keyword search with "remote session"

With the above minor enhancement, I am sending it for Final Review and towards publication.

Comment: I have written this doc based on my previous escalations. I thought this would help customers/CFE who may not have access the error/troubleshooting manuals.

Please let me know if this is an appropriate doc to be on Sunsolve and any changes to be done.
