V440 Server will not be able to boot S10U6 (see details below).

Affected Parts:

540-7027   8X DVD-ROM / 24X CD-ROM Drive Assembly, RoHS:Y

Impact

The Sun Fire V440 Server will not be able to boot S10U6 (or higher) from DVD TSST TS-L462C.

Contributing Factors

Any Sun Fire V440 Server containing DVD drive part number 540-7027 is impacted by this issue.  V440 systems that shipped after May of 2006 do not contain this part and are therefore not affected.

Symptoms

Impacted system will not boot.  System will work fine if not booting from Solaris 10U6 or higher DVD.

Error message when trying to boot V440 with S10U6 or higher from DVD:

The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
  {3} ok

Root Cause

The root cause for not being able to complete a V440 OBP boot of S10U6 or higher from TSST TS-L462C DVD is due to a flaw in the buffering algorithm of the TS-L462C drive firmware.

Field mitigation will be a drive swap out since the drive firmware can only be updated in a PC running Windows OS.

Corrective Action

Workaround:

When installing Solaris 10 U6 or higher it is recommended to upgrade via the network.
Follow the recommended steps on how to configure a wanboot server to perform remote system installations, which can be found via the below URL;

https://support.us.oracle.com/oip/faces/secure/km/DocumentDisplay.jspx?id=1007817.1

Resolution:

Please refer to the Workaround section above.
