Impact

Upon initial system installation there is no impact. However, if customer encounters a failed FMod in the future, they will notice the colored connectors holding the FMod in domains 0 and 2 are reversed, when comparing the colors found on the unit's top cover service label.

This may cause confusion for a customer who will be unsure if they are replacing the correct FMod in the correct domain.

Contributing Factors

Sun Storage F5100 Flash Arrays shipped between December 4, 2009 and December 24, 2009 may be impacted by this issue. Refer to the URL in the "Identification of Affected Parts" section showing system serial numbers confirmed to be impacted by this issue.

Symptoms

Customer will notice colors of domain 0 (black) and domain 2 (grey) connectors are reversed when looking at the physical connector tabs on the motherboard (ie, the domain 0 connectors are grey when they should be black, the domain 2 connectors are black, when they should be grey).

Root Cause

During manufacturing process, the connectors are fed manually with the individual connector parts, each variety of connector has a different feeder. Operator appears to have placed the black parts into the grey feeder and vice versa.

Containment is in place and root cause has been identified. Formal corrective action pending a process review on fresh build, but inspection stages have been added in the meantime to ensure no repeat, which has been in place since March 3, 2010.

Workaround:

If customer has one of the affected systems and encounters this swapped FMod connector color, Service will need to reassure the customer that the slot locations labeled on both the Service label and on the motherboard silkscreen do match and that the domains are still physically the same. They should ignore the mis-matched connector colors and rely on the physical domain locations and slot location identifiers when replacing a FMod.
