Product
Sun Netra T5220 Server

Date of Resolved Release
14-Jan-2010

Netra T5220 experience low fan threshold warnings (see details below).

Affected Parts:

  540-7994-01    4-Core 1.2GHz System Board
  540-7992-01    8-Core 1.2GHz System Board

Impact

Replacement spare boards may not contain the proper temperature thresholds for typical Netra operation.  The system may have faults for Sun Fire fan boards which are not installed on Netra systems.

Sun Netra T5220 Servers as shipped from the Sun Factory are not impacted.

Contributing Factors

When Netra T5220 System Boards are installed into systems at the Sun Factory, they are reprogrammed and therefore are not affected.

The following Netra T5220 System Board serial numbers from weeks 37 and 39 of 2009 in Sun Service's spares inventory are suspect if no "GSAP 5091" label is found on the board;

Symptoms

The Netra T5220 has lower fan speeds than the SunFire T5220.  Therefore typical speeds on the Netra can cause low fan threshold warnings if the SunFire thresholds (found in unreprogrammed ES segment) are used.

In some cases the host may not power-on with the affected system board installed.

Sample output from prtdiag -v follows;

Fans (Speeds Revolution Per Minute):
Sensor                            Status          Speed   Warn    Low
/SYS/FT0/F0/TACH      WARNING     4600    5000    3000
/SYS/FT0/F1/TACH      WARNING     4800    5000    3000
/SYS/FT0/F2/TACH      WARNING     4600    5000    3000
/SYS/FT1/F0/TACH      OK               5600    5000    3000
/SYS/FT1/F1/TACH      OK               5600    5000    3000
/SYS/FT2/F0/TACH      OK               6400    5000    3000

The warning speeds above should have been 2800 RPM for the top three fans and 4000 RPM for the lower ones.

Additionally, FMA detects the following faults on boot since the faulted components are not found in the Sun Fire:

sc> showfaults
  ID FRU                       Fault
1 /SYS/FANBD1     SP detected fault: Required board at FANBD1 is not present.
2 /SYS/SASBP      SP detected fault: Required board at SASBP is not present.
3 /SYS/MB         SP detected fault: unable to determine platform id

Root Cause

A Sun supply partner used SunFire T5220 systemboards which contained incorrect FRUID and ES segment data for the Netra in their last shipment to Sun.  These systemboards must be reloaded with the proper FRUID and ES segment data at the new vendor.  The responsible vendor for this issue no longer makes these boards.

Services spares being purged and reworked via GSAP 5091 as of 21-December-2009.

Corrective Action

Workaround:

No workaround available - see Resolution section.

Resolution:

If an affected system board (either Sun P/N 540-7992-01 or 540-7994-01) is obtained from spares, order another replacement spare of the same part number.  In addition, Sun P/N 542-0228-01 or 542-0230-01 are also substitutable replacements and not affected by this issue.

Return the affected board as DOA, and state on the Defective Material Tag that the returned board needs to be reworked per GSAP 5091.  Reworked 540-7992-01 and 540-7994-01 boards will contain a GSAP 5091 rework sticker.

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

Visually inspect suspect boards against the list of affected serial numbers in the Contributing Factors section above.

Boards with affected Serial Numbers that also contain a "GSAP 5091" label have been reworked and are not impacted.
