Sun Ray 2 units may have blurry video (see details below).

Affected Parts:

380-1352-10   Sun Ray2 CRU

Impact

Sun Ray 2 units may have blurry video output if the analog output is used.  Digital output functions properly.

Contributing Factors

This issue is limited to a specific date code range.  Sun Ray 2 units with a date code of 0811 to 0825 (inclusive) may be affected by this issue.

Symptoms

There are no error messages.  On affected units, the analog video output is blurry.  Digital output is not impacted by this issue.

Root Cause

This issue was caused by use of a wrong component in the manufacturing process, caused by an incorrect part being listed on the Bill Of Materials (BOM).  Automated testing failed to detect the blurry video.

Supplier corrected the BOM and improved the test process.  Corrective action was made available in Manufacturing via StopShip/Purge P001-20530 as of June 26, 2008 and in Services via GSAP 4385 as of July 14, 2008.

Corrective Action

Workaround:

Customer may elect to use the digital video output instead of the analog video output.  There is no workaround for the analog video output.

Resolution:

Upon customer request replace affected Sun Ray 2 units if analog output use is required.

All replacements must be coordinated by Tony Tran ([email protected], Sun internal extension x49586).  Contact Tony to coordinate the return of affected units and replacement with good units.  Tony will provide all instructions necessary to return and replace units.

DO NOT REPLACE AFFECTED UNITS WITH PARTS FROM RSL INVENTORIES.  DO NOT SCRAP AFFECTED UNITS.  Affected units must be returned to the supplier for proper credit.

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

Inspect unit serial number to verify parts are within the affected date code range of 0811 to 0825 inclusive.

Example Serial number: 0815BE82A4 - is in the affected date code range where "0815" is the date code.

Inspect boxes or units for a purge /rework label.  Boxes or units containing a StopShip/Purge label with the number "P001-20530.A1" have already been reworked and should not be affected.

Hardware Remediation and Material Availability Details:

Replacement stock is immediately available, but replacements must be coordinated through Tony Tran (per above).  DO NOT REPLACE AFFECTED UNITS WITH PARTS FROM RSL INVENTORIES.  DO NOT SCRAP AFFECTED UNITS.  Affected units must be returned to the supplier for proper credit.

Comments

This issue was fully evaluated as an FCO and found not to meet criteria due to it being a DOA issue and because the Services Logistics process could not effectively support this activity.
