Impact

Sun StorageTek SE6140 Arrays and CSM200 Expansion Trays shipped between September 1, 2006 and July 1, 2007 possibly have the wrong voltage labels applied.

This is purely a UL compliance issue. There is no impact on the trays performance and there are no health or safety issues associated with this issue. Customer systems with the incorrect labels are not UL compliant.

Contributing Factors

Sun Storage SE6140 Arrays and CSM200 Expansion Trays shipped from September 1, 2006 to July 1, 2007 are exposed to this issue.

Symptoms

There are no symptoms other than an AC unit will have a DC voltage label.

A Customer Letter has been provided which has a drawing of the label and where the replacement label (via a label kit) should be applied. This Customer Letter can be accessed via the below URL;

Root Cause

Root cause has been attributed to poor manufacturing quality practices within the supply vendor's production line.

Sun StorageTek SE6140, SE5300, SE5320, CSM200, CSM2 and VTL products were shipped with the wrong voltage label applied to the power supplies between September 1, 2006 and July 1, 2007. Power supplies were labeled DC voltage but were, and should have been labeled, AC voltage.

This issue was caught by the supply vendor and reported to Sun Quality / Supplier Management. The supply vendor has since updated their Quality practices and checks to prevent this issue from re-occurring.

Sun released the UL Label Kit (Sun p/n 555-1945-01) via ECO WO_38247 as of January 22, 2008.

Corrective Action

Target Completion Date: May 15th, 2009 (9 months from initial publication)

Resolution:

Contact all customers on customer list and recommend proactive installation of UL Label Kit (Sun p/n 555-1945-01). Each kit contains 7 self-adhesive AC labels. This kit should be treated as a CRU and no on-site call should be required. The new label can be placed on top of the existing label. This “new” label will correct the stated voltage ratings and satisfy UL.

Please note that the system should be taken out of service during the label application process, which should take no more than fifteen minutes. Customer should be advised to affix the new labels at their earliest convenience.

No on-site visit is required as the kit is considered a consumable CRU. However, if customer requests and FE go on-site, billing should be based on service deliverables of system warranty/contract type, or as the local Sun Service Manager deems appropriate knowing that there is no specific cost recovery for this activity.
