Product
Sun StorageTek D240 Media Tray

Part
  • Part No: 540-7092
  • Part Description: D240 DVD-RW Sled Assy

Impact

There is no impact to a D240 mediatray with this mis-labeled FRU installed, as the physical hardware is correct, only the label is incorrect. However, this may cause a serviceability issue when a failure of this DVD-RW drive occurs when the customer and/or Service attempt to order a new FRU and reference the incorrect FRU label.

Contributing Factors

The serial number date code range below can be referenced, along with the incorrect part number label (540-6789) to determine if you have found a FRU in the field that is affected by this issue.

D240 Systems with datecodes of 0636 to 0646 inclusive may be impacted
 Example D240 serial number/datecode; 0645BC1025
DVD-RW FRU datecode Weeks 0643 to 0645 inclusive may be impacted
 Example FRU serial number/datecode; F1938ZAL-0643Z00031

Symptoms

StorEdge D240 DVD-RW Sled Assemblies (540-7092-01) are mis-labeled with incorrect part number 540-6789 in a number of installed D240 systems and FRUs dispatched since November 2006.

No error messages available, only the part number label is incorrect.

Root Cause

From September 9th to November 16th 2006, Sun's supply vendor made an error during BOM transcription and incorrectly entered the 540-7092-01 FRU label as 540-6789-01.

Flexflow BOMS were also misconfigured with the incorrect part number.  A total of 167 D240 mediatrays and 117 FRUs were shipped during this period with the incorrect part numbering.

A GSAP (3815) was released to purge and rework all mislabeled RSL parts.

Workaround

If a part installed or received as a spare has part number label of 540-6789, this is actually part number 540-7092 and will function properly.  Only the label is incorrect.

If a part with part number of 540-6789 is removed from a system, it should be replaced with, and returned as, part number 540-7092.

Resolution

This is For Information Only and no action is to be taken, other than to understand that a number of D240 systems in the field may have a DVD-RW FRU that is mis-labeled.

Comments

A GSAP was issued to the global RSL/Distribution Centers to ensure future shipments of FRUs to the field will be properly labeled.

GSAP = Global Services Action Plan

Hardware Remediation Details

A visual inspection of the FRU part label is required to verify the FRU has been mislabeled. Mislabled parts will have a part number label of 540-6789 (currently not a valid Sun part number), but these are actually the 540-7092 FRU.
