Product
Sun StorageTek L8500 Tape Library
Sun StorageTek StreamLine SL8500

Impact

Unable to mount tapes to drives during installation.

In some cases the IBM drive does not secure the cartridge quick enough when the library delivers the cartridge. If the drive does not secure the cartridge prior to the library retracting the gipper the cartridge can "bounce" out of the throat of the drive. This leaves the cartridge in an unknown location resulting in a failed mount.

Contributing Factors

The Sun StorageTek SL8500 with the Sun StorageTek IBM Gen 4 (LTO4-IB4FC-SL85Z) installed is impacted by this issue.

Symptoms

Symptom will be Failed Mounts to the drive. In some instances the mount can fail with Error 6 on drive operator panel.

Minimum Code required for IBM Gen 4 support in SL8500 is 3.77. Initial shipments of IBM Gen 4 drives on SL8500 trays were installed in the wrong mounting location. These drives were not mounted into the "LTO" holes, causing failed puts to the drives.

Root Cause

Manufacturing instructions were incorrect, instructing operators to install the drive in the incorrect location. Mounting instructions in manufacturing have been corrected. In addition, a change was added to the library code (3.77) to hold the cart long enough for the drive to secure the cartridge.

Resolution

During installation check and remediate for both of the below;

  1. Drives that are mounted in the wrong location will need to be moved to the correct location. The correct is label "LTO". For removal and replacement procedures use the Replaceable Parts Catalog located on CRC.
  2. 3.77 microcode is required for the SL8500 and can be downloaded from CRC.
