If mode 186 is enabled, SCSI-2 reservations may not be correctly enforced. Any SunCluster configuration using SE9900 for shared storage may be affected by this issue, if the cluster is using SCSI-2 reservations and mode 186 is enabled. Multiple hosts may be incorrectly permitted to access reserved LUNs, leading to unexpected data alterations and/or improper cluster behavior.

Mode 186 is only intended for use with Veritas Cluster (VCS). It is not necessary to enable mode 186 for SunCluster, regardless of the type of SCSI reservations used by the cluster. Unless the customer has a VCS cluster attached, disable mode 186 as follows:

1. From the SVP enter a <CTRL><SHIFT>m.
2. You will get a password box. The password is "mode".
3. The SVP will go from "View Mode" to "Mode Mode"
4. Select the Install button.
5. Select the Change Configuration button.
6. Select the System Option button.
7. Within System Option, there will now appear a "mode" button. Select that, and you will get a screen with available bits to set for system options 0-255.
8. Uncheck mode 186, confirm and save the changes.

If your customer has both SunCluster and VCS sharing the same array, a fix for this problem has been provided in microcode 21-11-02, that will allow mode 186 to be safely enabled. This fix is only available for V Series (SE9970 and SE9980) arrays. Once 21-11-02 has been installed, use the new "Extended Solaris" host mode 29 for all host groups to which SunCluster is attached. When host mode 29 is assigned, the function of system option mode 186 is suppressed, and SunCluster will function correctly. Continue using "Solaris" host mode 09 for Solaris hosts running VCS. Note that beginning with 21-11-02, mode 186 is only effective if host mode is set to 09 for Solaris. Mode 186 will no longer have any effect for other host modes, such as Windows or AIX.

With microcode 21-14-02, a series of new host modes has been introduced. The new host modes allow mode 186 functionality to be set for particular hosts or host groups, rather than globally at the array level. It will *not* cause a problem to continue using mode 186 and host mode 29 in combination with the new host modes. No fix for this issue is expected for 9910 or 9960 arrays, but workarounds may be available. If your customer needs to have both VCS and SunCluster attached to the same 9910 or 9960, open a case and escalate to PTS Storage / SEJSC for assistance.
