Impact

Contributing Factors

Improper methods of administering the Sun StorEdge 5210/5310 and Sun StorageTek 5320/5220 which include improper procedures to revive the volumes and drives, firmware upgrades, off-lining drives, etc.


Symptoms

Various symptoms, amongst others, that may be experienced could be;

  1. Volumes and multiple drives are offline
  2. Data corruption
  3. NAS does not boot up

Root Cause

Incorrect procedures applied without having complete knowledge of the management tools.


Resolution

When using management tools on Sun StorEdge 5210/5310 and Sun StorageTek 5320/5220 products, extreme care should be taken to avoid a system outage and/or data corruption/loss.

Recommended action is to contact Sun support for proper procedures, and to use the management tools under the guidance of Sun backline support.
