If the Lower Interface Board on a non-RoHS compliant Sun Fire V210 or V240 is replaced using a RoHS compliant version, the system must contain an OBP version 4.18.5 or later and ALOM version 1.5.4 or later.

If the OBP is below 4.18.5 it will not recognize the part number of the new RoHS compliant Lower Interface Board, by default this will incorrectly cause a V210 system to be identified as a Sun Fire V240.  There will be no error messages displayed when this happens.

When the system's ALOM version is below 1.5.4 the ALOM may not offer the user a login prompt. Instead an "sc>" prompt will be displayed, and attempts to execute commands will respond with a message indicating that the admin password needs to be set.

Note: Affected parts can be identified by a physical inspection of the part label sticker located on the interface board during replacement.

For a SunFire V210:

The FRU part number for a RoHS v210 interface board is 371-0792.  Some 371-0792 parts were electronically altered to be part number 370-5129 check the sticker label. If "wo_32388" has been added to the label, the board has been altered and can be used with OBP versions lower than 4.18.5. All other boards labeled as 371-0792 require the newer OBP.

For a SunFire V240:

The FRU part number for a RoHS v240 interface board is 371-0796.  All of these boards are affected and require OBP 4.18.5 or greater.

The part number of the Lower Interface Board signifies to OBP whether the system is a V210 or a V240. The RoHS compliant interface boards use a new part number that is unknown to OBP versions prior to 4.18.5. All RoHS compliant systems that ship with these boards contain OBP versions that recognize these part numbers. However non-RoHS systems already in the field may have an OBP version earlier than 4.18.5 and will not recognize these new numbers.

Update the system's OBP by using patch <> or later. 121684-01 contains OBP version 4.18.10.

Note: There is no patch containing OBP version 4.18.5 this was a manufacturing only release of the OBP. Patch 121684 containing OBP 4.18.10 or later should be used to address this issue.

If the system's ALOM is below 1.5.4 - first update ALOM to 1.5.4 or later by downloading the latest ALOM firmware from Sun's download site: http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=415453f9

If ALOM is not offering a login prompt or allowing the console command to be used then perform the following steps to boot Solaris so that the latest ALOM firmware may be applied:

1. Connect to the SERIAL MGT port of the system via the "tip" command, a terminal or a terminal emulator
2. Apply power to the server
3. Allow ALOM to boot and timeout to console mode. This may take up to 5 minutes, do not type anything at the "sc>" prompt as this will interrupt the timeout
4. Once ALOM has timed out to console mode press the power button on the front of the server and then boot the system to Solaris. (Note: the console may react very sluggishly due to ALOM not recognizing the LIB)
5. Login as root and update ALOM to version 1.5.4 or later

Support for the RoHS Lower Interface Boards was added to OBP 4.18.5 and ALOM 1.5.4.
