Solution Type FAB (standard) Sure Solution 1000557.1 : Marginal seating of Sun Fire V490 and V480 CPU/Memory boards is causing hard to diagnose non-fatal, fatal, and CPU/Memory board power-on faults.

Impact The most common issue seen in a two CPU/Memory Board V480/490 system is no power-on at hardware initialization of one of the CPU/Memory boards. However, in many cases the system can pass POST and boot - in Solaris there could be Kernel Panics, Fatal Resets or a variety of non-fatal errors reported against one or both of the CPU/Memory boards or components. Contributing Factors Centerplane flexing/bending when inserting a CPU/Memory Board into Centerplane Slot B. Symptoms Most common scenario seen is the CPU/Memory board in Slot B doesn't make a proper connection and therefore doesn't power-on. When this happens you will not get the green OK power LED lit on the outside edge of the Slot B CPU/Memory board or the Slot B inserted LED on the upper part of the centerplane will not be lit. In some cases one may see the same instead or also for Slot A. Root Cause The issue is caused by centerplane flexing/bending when CPU/Memory board slot A is installed before CPU/Memory board Slot B. The centerplane flexing/bending may prevent a complete seating of the CPU/Memory board Slot B. Workaround Engineering recommends on single CPU/Memory board systems that the Slot A board be populated, as Slot A has been found to be less susceptible to the centerplane flexing/bending issue. Insert, seat and tighten-down CPU/Memory board Slot B before the installing of CPU/Memory board slot A. During the Slot B CPU/Memory board installation, maintain upward force from the other side of the centerplane with your hand against the centerplane in the CPU/Memory board Slot B area. Please see Internal Troubleshooting document 1017945.1 for the "Sun Fire[TM] V880/V890 V480/V490 Best Practice CPU MEM module replacement procedure"... https://support.us.oracle.com/oip/faces/secure/km/DocumentDisplay.jspx?id=1017945.1 And as you have learned from this FAB, in addition to the procedure in Troubleshoot document 1017945.1, you need to install the CPU/Memory board in Slot B before installing the one in Slot A - and when installing the CPU/Memory board in Slot B do maintain upward force from the other side of the centerplane with your hand against the centerplane in the CPU/Memory board Slot B area. Resolution There is a two step resolution. First, Engineering is adding more welds on the chassis bracket which the CPU/Memory Board Ejector contacts to give it more leverage. Second, there will be a phase in of the new Centerplane VHDM connectors (to which the CPU/Memory boards mate) with lower insertion force.
