Impact

It has been found that the 3V lithium coin cell battery used to store date and CMOS settings on the Blade may be prematurely failing in blades that are not installed in chassis for an extended period of time. The typical shelf-life of the battery when power is not applied to the blade is 1 year, however there has been found an issue that could cause it to fail in less than 3 months of sitting not powered. Upon installation, resets after blade removal and re-insertion into the chassis, or chassis power off/on, the BIOS will stop awaiting user input with BIOS settings and date/time for BIOS and SP reset to default, rather than auto-booting with user defined settings and current date/time. System will boot after user input and store settings if the blade is left in a powered-on chassis.

This will primarily be seen during installation or FRU replacement on Sun Blade X8400 and X8420 Server Modules, in particular where the module may have stayed boxed for an extended period prior to use. This will only occur on blades that are not installed and in use as the battery maintains the real-time clock and CMOS settings while the blade is not powered. When the blade is installed in a chassis and operating with normal power the settings are maintained by the blade power, and not the battery.

Symptoms

During power-on the BIOS will stop after POST and prior to booting the OS, with CMOS Settings Invalid.

Press F1 to load optimal defaults and continue.

Press F2 to enter Setup.  In addition, the real-time clock will be reset to the default value of 01 January 2000 for host BIOS and 01 January 1972 for blade service processor.

If the Lithium Battery is failed, this will occur on every power-on after a blade installation, removal/reinstall into the chassis, blade or chassis power-cycle.

Root Cause

Due to the lithium battery type being used, there is potential that normal handling can start the battery chemical process to drain the battery, thereby reducing the typical usage life from 1 year to less than 3 months.

The battery circuit and type has been redesigned in the next generation blade to provide longer shelf life and premature draining protection, to prevent this issue occurring in future blades.

Corrective action was made available as follows:

ECO WO_37041, approved on June 5, 2007 adds spare batteries to all A4Es and A4Fs via the base assembly numbers 599-3081 (E's) and 599-3112 (F's).

ECO WO_35103, approved on January 29, 2007 restructured the Battery for all Blade FRUs to package them separately and not assembled in the Coin Battery Socket.

ECO WO_35677, approved on June 1, 2007 creates a "new" Battery FRU number (Sun p/n 150-4315-01).

Corrective action was made available in Services via GSAP 3753 as of December 20, 2006.

Resolution

The battery by itself is a FRU, however for convenience of new installs, a loose 2nd battery will be included in the box of all shipped new blades (X-option and FRU) to be used in the event of an original battery failure.

For more information on where the battery is located and how to replace one, see the Sun Blade 8000 Series Online Information System available via the below URL;

  http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/Servers/blade_servers/blade_8000_modular/index.htm

After installation into the chassis, power-on the blade and bring up BIOS on the onboard video, or remote javaRconsole video or serial redirection via SP. If you see the symptom messages on first power-on, then hit ?F2? to enter setup, change the date and time and press ?F10? to save and exit. Remove the blade from the chassis and re-install, and if you see the same symptom, replace the battery.

Battery location and replacement procedure is included in Sun Blade 8000 Series Online Information System (Sun p/n 819-5846).

Issue Description:

Impact

[This should explain the impact to the running system in
general and the impact to the affected component in particular;
in terms of outage, downtime, loss of availability, loss
of data, etc. State the actual impact, for example,
the issue causes a system panic, reset, hang etc. If this is
a serviceability issue, state how it affects the ability to
service or maintain the product.]

It has been found that the 3V lithium coin cell battery used to store
date and CMOS settings on the Blade may be prematurely failing in blades
that are not installed in chassis' for an extended period of time. The
typical shelf-life of the battery when power is not applied to the blade
is 1 year, however there has been found an issue that could cause it to
fail in less than 3 months of sitting not powered. Upon installation,
resets after blade removal and re-insertion into the chassis, or chassis
power off/on, the BIOS will stop awaiting user input with BIOS settings
and date/time for BIOS and SP reset to default, rather than auto-booting
with user defined settings and current date/time. System will boot
after user input and store settings if the blade is left in a powered-on
chassis.

Contributing Factors

[List anything, such as specific operating environments and/or
configurations that may contribute to the issue.]

This will primarily be seen during installation or FRU replacement on
Sun Blade X8400 and X8420 Server Modules, in particular where the module
may have stayed boxed for an extended period prior to use. This will
only occur on blades that are not installed and in use as the battery
maintains the real-time clock and CMOS settings while the blade is not
powered. When the blade is installed in a chassis and operating with
normal power the settings are maintained by the blade power, and not the
battery.

Symptoms

[Provide exact error messages and where and when the error
messages are likely to occur.]

During power-on, the BIOS will stop after POST and prior to booting the
OS, with “CMOS Settings Invalid. Press F1 to load optimal defaults and
continue. Press F2 to enter Setup”. In addition, the real-time clock
will be reset to the default value of 01 January 2000 for host BIOS and
01 January 1972 for blade service processor. If the Lithium Battery is
failed, this will occur on every power-on after a blade installation,
removal/reinstall into the chassis, blade or chassis power-cycle.

Root Cause

[This is ultimate cause of the issue and can be provided in
engineering/technical terms.]

Due to the lithium battery type being used, there is potential that
normal handling can start the battery chemical process to drain the
battery, thereby reducing the typical usage life from 1 year to less
than 3 months.

[Explain how and when the issue was resolved by manufacturing,
engineering or by the vendor.]

The battery circuit and type has been redesigned in the next generation
blade to provide longer shelf life and premature draining protection, to
prevent this issue occurring in future blades.

Corrective Action:

Supported Workaround (if available)

Final Resolution

[Provide recommended action for Sun Field personnel to
follow in order to implement this fix in the field.]

[A detailed step-by-step procedure for implementing the fix,
or high level instructions together with pointers to specific
documentation pages.]

The battery by itself is a FRU however for convenience of new installs,
a loose 2nd battery will be included in the box of all shipping new
blades (X-option and FRU) to be used in the event of an original battery
failure.

For more information on where the battery is located and how to replace,
see the Sun Blade 8000 Series Online Information System available here:
http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/Servers/blade_servers/blade_8000_modular/index.htm

[List all relevant product manuals, documentation and URL's which
will help to implement the Corrective Action.]

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

[State whether the affected components require visual inspection.]

[Explain how the field would identify the "bad" or affected
parts from the "good" or fixed parts.]

[Give precise commands, syntax, and sample output.]

[State which Explorer files/directories might also be utilized
for determining affected parts/product.]

After installation into the chassis, power-on the blade and bring up
BIOS on the onboard video, or remote javaRconsole video or serial
redirection via SP. If you see the symptom messages on first power-on,
then hit “F2” to enter setup, change the date and time and press “F10”
to save and exit. Remove the blade from the chassis and re-install, and
if you see the same symptom, then replace the battery.
