Sun Fire V210 Server

Symptoms

Increased FRU demand has been observed with regards to the V210 power supply.
Because the part is a consumable, engineering has had little success in root causing the failure mode.

The product team is requesting that the field return any V210 power
supply failures that are encountered through Process CPAS. Please note
that the Process CPAS is different from the regular CPAS process. (The
Process CPAS steps are outlined at the bottom of this bulletin.)
Engineering will then start working with the power supply vendor to
understand what might be causing this failure condition to occur.

Process CPAS Steps
------------------

If an V210 Power supply fails in the field, the field engineer should
contact the alias [email protected] through e-mail with regard to
returning the failed power supply for RCCA.
In the e-mail, these pieces of information should be included as minimum:
  case #,
  customer name,
  system serial #,
  Power Supply PN,
  Power Supply SN,
  Failure description,

Upon receiving an e-mail from the field engineer identifying that a
a power supply should be return, a responsible member
on the alias [email protected] will do the following:

  - Log into eCPAS @ http://ecpas.ebay
  - Click on "New Process CPAS" next to the "Find" button in the My CPAS screen.
  - Fill out information on the New Process CPAS form
  - CPAS # will be issued
  - Send a reply e-mail to the field engineer with shipping information:
     Reference CPAS#
     Ship-to Address:
The field engineer should then return the power supply as instructed in
  the e-mail message received.

Engineering will be working with the power supply vendor to understand
what might be causing this failure condition to occur.

Symptom:

The failure mode in question indicates a power supply fault where the
ALOM 'showenvironment' command outputs a FAIL status for the power supply with
an ON indicator for the Underspeed value indicating a fan unit that is not
operating within it's required range.

Example:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Power Supplies:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Supply  Status          Underspeed  Overtemp  Overvolt  Undervolt  Overcurrent
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS0     FAIL            ON          OFF       OFF       OFF        OFF

Root Cause

Contamination in the assembly process has lead to rust forming on the shaft which causes early life failure of the fan.

Resolution

The only corrective action at this time is to replace the power supply upon failure.

Modification History
Date: 17-MAR-2006
