Impact

Ultra 20 and Ultra 40 workstations, as well as X2100 servers, historically shipped with the 82GB hard drives, but the Hitachi 82GB inventory is about to run out. The Sirius team and Drive team have agreed to transition to the 80GB hard drives by April 2006.

Release 540-6644-02 and F540-6644-02 only list the 80GB (390-0302-02) on the BOM.

THIS POLICY IS FOR RAID 1 CRU ONLY.

If a RAID 1 system has 82GB Hitachi drives for both the primary and secondary drives and receives an 80GB Hitachi drive as a FRU, then the mirror cannot be recreated because the 80GB Hitachi drive is slightly smaller than the 82GB Hitachi drive. The issue is that both Hitachi disks have the same X Option (F540-6644-xx) that is used when ordering these peripherals. These different volume capacities will negatively impact rebuilding RAID 1 array.

The following paragraph summarize the policy:

Replace a RAID 1 hard drive when:

  1. The hard drive fails during operations due to unrecoverable data errors.
  2. The system starts to log "Drive Failure Warning" errors. 

Note: Disk mirroring can not be recreated when the replacement drive is smaller than the drive that was replaced. Therefore, mirroring ceases to function properly.

Workaround

If a RAID 1 mirroring Hitachi 82 GB hard drive goes bad, both hard drives in the RAID 1 configuration must be replaced with new 80GB PN: F540-6644-02.

Due to the reasons mentioned above, both drives in the mirror need to be replaced with current 80GB drives.

When replacing the disk launch Mediashield, which is loaded with the drivers from the supplemental or tools and drivers CD.

When Mediashield launches, it will identify the state of the RAID within the system degraded.

Plug in the new disk and wait - the program will automatically rebuild the RAID.

Note: In the event that this does not happen automatically make sure the new disk has no RAID associated with it by setting the label as "Free Disk".  Once it is a free disk Mediashield will automatically configure the RAID.


Resolution

Note:  This issue was fully evaluated as an FCO candidate via the official FCO process.  However, the FCO was rejected due to the very low expected failure rate, relatively small quantities out in the field, and the fact that it has not been reported at any customer site.

The drive group stated that roughly 200 82GB drives were released before the FW change happened to make the drives 80GB. In addition, our chipset only supports RAID under Windows as no driver exists for Linux or Solaris yet. The Windows RAID software will base the RAID on the smallest drive in the array. The only time this will be an issue is if someone has completely loaded 82GB worth of data and they try to mirror it to an 80GB drive.  The odds of that happening are extremely low.



Given that only 200 or so drives are out in the field and the low probability of customers experiencing this issue, an FCO is not required.
