Solution Type FAB (standard) Sure Solution 1000071.1 : FCO A0271-1: Sun Fire V440 Servers may not meet RoHS compliance due to top-cover gasket.
PreviouslyPublishedAs 200087 Product Sun Fire V440 Server Part
Impact Two gaskets (PN 240-4264-02) on some RoHS Sun Fire V440 servers are not RoHS compliant as was certified in error by the vendor. To make them RoHS compliant, replacement of the two piece gaskets with two new gasket parts (P/N 240-5884-01 and 240-5887-01) is needed. This issue does not affect the Netra 440 or other non-RoHS marketing part numbers for the Sun Fire V440 not listed in this document. Sun Fire V440 RoHS servers with serial numbers starting with 0626 (or earlier) are impacted by this issue. Sun Fire V440 RoHS servers with serial numbers starting with 0627 (and later) are fully RoHS compliant. This issue was corrected in Sun manufacturing before the RoHS deadline and, other than RoHS compliance, does not in any way affect the reliability or functionality of the systems in question. RoHS or "Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment" is a directive that applies to European Union member states. It went into effect July 1st, 2006. This directive (EU RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC) outlines what is required of electronic equipment that is to be sold within the European Union. Equipment that meets these requirements are often described as RoHS compliant. Well in advance of the 1st July 2006 RoHS deadline, Sun Microsystems announced versions of the Sun Fire V440 that were described as being RoHS compliant. However, Sun has now determined that despite assurances from the supplier, the material used in the top cover gasket in certain Sun Fire V440 servers may not be RoHS compliant. Sun has already sent a communication to our channel partners, and where possible, affected systems have been remediated in channel inventories to minimize the overall end-customer impact. Contributing Factors The type of plastic resin used to make the "C" clip was changed to a different resin that is RoHS compliant. Non-compliant gaskets have a silver appearance with no company logo printed on the parts. The compliant parts have a gold appearance with the company logo, "Laird" printed on the parts located all across the surface and at a slight angle. Below is a cross reference table for marketing / manufacturing part numbers. Marketing P/N Manufacturing P/N A42-XH42C2-04HD 602-3257-01 A42-XH44C2-08HD 602-3258-01 A42-XH44C2-16HD 602-3259-01 A42-XH44C2-32ZD 602-3260-01 A42-XH42C2-04HD-IP 602-3257-01 A42-XH44C2-08HD-IP 602-3258-01 A42-XH44C2-16HD-IP 602-3259-01 A42-XH44C2-32ZD-IP 602-3260-01 A42-XH42C2-04HD-DE 602-3257-01 A42-XH44C2-08HD-E 602-3258-01 Sun Fire V440 RoHS servers (see specific marketing P/Ns above) with serial numbers starting with 0626 (or earlier) may need to have the top cover gasket replaced in order to be fully RoHS compliant. Sun Fire V440 RoHS servers with serial numbers starting with 0627 (and above) are fully RoHS compliant. Other non-RoHS compliant Sun Fire V440 servers, with marketing P/Ns other than what is listed above, are not affected by this issue, regardless of system serial number, as they were sold as non-RoHS compliant. Symptoms This is a compliance issue, there are no symptoms and it does not affect the reliability or functionality of the systems in question. An affected Customer List has been provided and can be accessed via the below (Internal Only) URL; http://sunwebcollab.east.sun.com/gm/document-1.9.2114655 A Sun Legal approved Customer Letter is available via the below URL; http://sdpsweb.central/FIN_FCO/FAB/102524/SPE/RoHS_Gasket-Customer_Letter.sxw Root Cause These EMI gaskets are affixed to a plastic "C" clip which is then pressed onto the Top Cover. It was determined that the plastic resin used is not RoHS compliant. A customer can only determine this by having the material analyzed. There is no operational impact to the system. Sun had obtained a RoHS Certificate from the supplier for this product. Our supplier then learned that their supplier was in error, and informed Sun of the condition. Engineering has since had the new material analyzed for RoHS compliance as part of the corrective action. Corrective action was cut into Manufacturing via ECO WO_33506 as of June 28th, 2006. Gasket kits were made available to Services via ECO WO_34013. Target Completion Date: AMER: November 13, 2007 APAC: November 23, 2007 EMEA: November 13, 2007 After the above dates this remediation defaults to Upon Failure (Reactive).
Contact customers on the Customer List and determine if customer wishes this remediation done on any affected system. Replacement Time Estimate: 15 minutes Hot Swappable: Yes Replacement Instructions: Order Gasket kit, part number 560-2871-01 and replace top cover gaskets per the instruction document found via the below URL: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19088-01/v440.srvr/819-7418-11/819-7418-11.pdf Each kit contains ten gasket sets which will allow remediation of ten systems. Remove Top Cover and remove two gaskets. Replace top cover gaskets with new gasket material (Sun p/n 240-5884-01 and 240-5887-01). Tools required: Phillips screw driver to loosen Top Cover screw. Gaskets are pressed on by hand and can be removed by hand. Comments Note 1: This knowledge asset was initially published as a non-Hardware FAB.
